Turkish game developer TaleWorld’s 2012 masterpiece Mount & Blade: Warband drew a lot of attention from the gamers, especially from the RPG fans. The singleplayer threw players in a vast, open-ended world with plenty of options but that wasn’t what made Warband stay alive for 8 years.
Considering the fact that from a technical standpoint, Warband was outdated even when it came out, the game should have been dead years ago. The graphics are 15 years old and the sound design is not too shabby either. But what kept this game alive were 2 things: amazing gameplay with easy to learn but extremely hard to master combat and the huge modding community. Ever since the game was launched, developers welcomed the modding community and the game was open to all kinds of modifications and this gave way to thousands of different mods. The Last Days of the Third Age
One of the best total conversion mods that was created for the original Mount & Blade was conversed to be able to run on Warband. As you can understand from the title, this mod lets you play the events of the Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels. All the factions of the Middle Earth are available for you to play as and there are many fun side activities. There are different races with different bonuses/penalties and all of the gear and items reflect the Middle-Earth. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, this mod alone is worth buying Warband for.

It is the ability to set yourself up as a king or queen of your own fully fledged faction. Mount & Blade: Warband has one of the most simple-looking yet really hard to master combat systems. The directional attacks and blocks make each encounter a test of reflexes and guess. During all that, landing a perfect slice to your enemy’s neck feels extremely satisfying, but what if told you that it can get better? As its name suggests, Decapitate and Dismember mod lets you decapitate and dismember your enemies and watch their heads and limbs fly off.

Bear Force 2
If you do not own the original Mount & Blade and therefore cannot play the brilliant Star Wars mod that is Star Wars Conquest, Bear Force II is probably the best Star Wars total conversion mod for Warband. It is a multiplayer only tactical shooter taking place in the Star Wars Universe. It has 6 factions with each having multiple different classes and a unique shooting and force system. From normal infantryman to jet troopers to using force with Sith/Jedis, there is a lot of detailed, fun content here for Star Wars fans.

If you ever feel lonely in the vast world of Warband, Full Invasion 2 can spice things up with its co-op survival formula. You can team up with other players and battle countless waves of invaders and bosses to survive as long as possible. There are various different maps, classes, enemy types and bosses. Blood and Steel is like a semi-total conversion mod; it changes a lot from the vanilla game but does not create a whole new universe/story. Mount And Blade Ww2 China Battlefield
If you are bored from the classic medieval style of the vanilla game or all the other mods and just want to try something entirely different, H.O.T.D. (short for Highschool of the Dead) is probably the craziest Mount & Blade: Warband out there. You are thrown into a Japan that is infested with zombies and you try to survive with various weapons, characters and enemies. There are 4 factions: high schoolers, police, the Takagi mob family and the zombies themselves. It is not without its problems but if you want to turn Warband into something crazy and unrecognizable, this mod takes the cake.

Gekokujo
If you like Japanese history or anything samurai-related, this Warband mod is for you since it takes the game’s singleplayer into the Sengoku period of Japan. Just like the vanilla game, you will start from nothing and attempt to gain control of the entire country. The mod itself contains more content than the native game: 32 towns, 72 castles, and 161 villages. Of course, entire weapon, armor and item inventory is changed to fit the theme of the era and there a whopping number of 20 factions.

Warsword Conquest
Right now you may be asking “Is there a fantasy world that isn’t modded into Mount & Blade?” and the answer to that is probably no. Warsword Conquest is a total conversion mod for Mount & Blade: Warband that takes us into the world of Warhammer. There are races from the books such as orcs, dwarves, elves, vampires, Skaven and Lizardmen and you can play as any one of these. Of course, just like any total conversion mod, there are new weapons, armor and items. If you own Warband and like Warhammer, it is a no-brainer.

A World of Ice and Fire
Another great total conversion mod for Warband that is featuring another awesome fantasy world, A World of Ice and Fire takes us to the world of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones. You create your own house and challenge the Seven Kingdoms and try to claim the Iron Throne by battling and betraying your opponents. The mod is complete as it stands today and it was last updated in this June. There are a plethora of new armor sets, weapons and items and the entire map is changed to fit the Game of Thrones universe. For the fans of series, this mod is a must-try.

Prophesy of Pendor
Unlike most of the mods we listed here, Prophesy of Pendor does not take you into a well-known fantasy universe, it rather creates its own and does a quite good job at that. It tries to find a sweet spot between the generic medieval theme of the native game and the fantasy-fiction themes with a low fantasy setting. You play as a hero with an aim of uniting the lords of Pendor under a single Ruler again. Now, as the developers said, “Prepare to enter the world of Pendor and accept the challenge of the Prophesy – if you dare.”.

1776 American Revolution
Just like its name suggests, 1776 American Revolution takes us back into the times of American revolution. You do not have to fight for rebels; you can side with Britain to even join the Native Americans that see both rebels and Britain as the same. Of course, every single item is replaced to fit the era with the guns are being the most significant change and the original map is replaced by a piece of North America. If you wanted more from the Mount & Blade standalone DLC Napoleonic Wars, this is the mod for you.

Mount & Blade was one of the first games to master horseback combat in a way that worked consistently and where the controls didn’t make you feel like you were piloting a rickety ice-cream truck. Yet, Mount And Blade didn’t stop there. The developers created an open world where your destiny is your own, where your level upgrades actually had a noticeable effect, and where the battle maps were more than just a melee of iron and blood.
Games Similar To Mount And Blade
To be honest, there are very few games like Mount And Blade as of 2017, however due to it’s popularity more are sure to follow. It stands relatively alone in its field, but there are some games that allow you to experience different elements of Mount & Blade, so here are a few you may like to consider.
1. Kenshi
Kenshi is an open-ended RPG. You get to fight swarms of bandits on a real-time 3D map. The free-roaming element makes it similar to Mount And Blade, and you can pick your own path in life–be it a trader, warlord, rebel or thief.
One of the most noticeable differences is the fact that Kenshi lacks character and often feels vapid and hollow. You are running around doing your own thing, but it is tough to figure out your own motivation. Much of the time, you have to find ways of making your own fun. That is not to say that Kenshi is a bad game, in fact, it deserves is positive online reputation, but it just cannot compete with Mount And Blade.
2. War of the Roses
Some of the fight mechanics in “War of the Roses” the game are very similar to Mount And Blade. They are similar in terms of how you swipe in different directions, and how your position with regards to your enemy makes a difference on how effective your strike is. Your strike also has a different effect based on where you strike, how hard you strike, and with what weapon you strike. In these respects, it is fair to say that many of the fight mechanics are similar to Mount & Blade. Even the sound effects of iron crushing bone are crispy and juicy like with M&B.
The game War of the Roses involved running around and taking part in medieval-style battles with other online players. Sadly, the developers have removed the game from the servers and deleted it from online hosts. You cannot even play LAN versions of the game because of a lack of support. The game was officially closed down on the 28th of February 2017. The game only had 2500 active players when it was shut down. If you want to play, you will have to wait for GOG.com to resurrect it as they have done with so many other old and abandoned games.
3. Fable
If you were quickly shown a clip of a character running around a village in Fable, and quickly shown a clip of a character running around a village in M&B, you could be forgiven for thinking they are the same game. In truth, the skins in Fable are more textured, even if they are stretched over less complex objects. In Fable, you get to run around various locations cutting up enemies and slicing the snot from the nose of angry villains.
Yet, Fable differs from Mount & Blade in a wide variety of ways. For example, Fable has a very strong and linear story, whereas you make your own story in M&B. Fable is more about story progression and fighting, whereas Mount And Blade is an open-world sandbox game where the user experience goes the direction you lead it. Nevertheless, if you would like to try something similar to the Mount & Blade fighting style and setting, then try Fable because it is a fairly decent game for people who like story-focused RPG games.
4. Sid Meier’s Pirates
You wouldn’t think that Sid Meiers would be any good at creating pirate games, especially ones with a real-time mechanic. Nevertheless, his Pirates game isn’t bad if you like that sort of thing. Honestly, the game is very little like Mount & Blade because very few games are like M&B. Nevertheless, many who play M&B recommend it and the swordplay element is slightly similar to what you experience in Mount And Blade. You strike from different angles, you block, and you move around to get a better swinging position.
The annoying thing about Sid Meier’s Pirates is its lack of developer support. I had to go to the online community to help fix its bugs and get it working on Windows 10. Some say the fact you can sack cities is also another reason why Sid Meier’s Pirates is similar to M&B, and where I agree in theory, the process of sacking, the act itself, the after-effect, and the benefits are all very different.

5. Mount and Blade Mods
If you have seen the trailers for the games listed above, and you are not too impressed, then try a few of the Mount And Blade mods. Once you have compulsively played your 200 hours of Mount And Blade, you may try their most popular upgrade, which is Mount And Blade Warband. It improves a wide variety of Mound & Blade functions. It slightly alters the bladed combat, and it changes the way a swing does damage when you attack on horseback. Mount And Blade Warband also gives your horse a life bar, so you know how long it will be before your horse craps out on you and goes nose-first into the dirt. If you lose your horse, then knock an enemy off of his/her horse and take that one until the end of the battle.
Your horse cannot die permanently like your men do, but if it is cut down too often then it becomes lame and you find yourself hobbling around on a clunky dustbin with four legs that has all the charging power of a baby goose. There are also more weapons, armor, items, lands, kingdoms, people, quests and NPC interactions with the Warband upgrade. Do not short sell yourself by getting WarBand or any of the other mods before you have played the first Mount And Blade game. Give yourself a good 200 hours with Mount And Blade first, and then move on to the mods. You will better appreciate the upgrades once you have become accustomed to the base game.
